Dzi Beads are ancient beads from Tibet. Similar to etched carnelians, they are designed by baking natural dyes onto agate. These beads are believed to have been created around the 1st to 6th centuries AD. However, many aspects, such as the components of the dyes used in the baking process, remain a mystery, making them one of the most enigmatic antique beads. While primarily found in Tibet, they are also discovered in Bhutan and regions like Ladakh in the Himalayas. Different baked patterns on these beads are believed to carry various meanings, with beads featuring round "eye" patterns being particularly prized. In Tibet, they are considered talismans of wealth and prosperity and are cherished as heirlooms. Recently, they have gained popularity in China, where they are known as "Tian Zhu" (Heavenly Beads). Many replicas are now made using similar techniques, but ancient Dzi Beads remain incredibly rare and valuable.
