Deccan Elegance. Cotton Blend Plain Ilkal Saree - Baadal. A soft ash-grey canvas lifted by warm rust borders and ivory-striped pallav, carrying Ilkal’s signature geometry with lightness. Originating from the town of Ilkal in the Bagalkot district of northern Karnataka, near the border of Maharashtra, the Ilkal saree is a hallmark of Deccan textile heritage. Ilkal sarees are usually crafted in cotton or cotton-silk blends and are celebrated for their distinctive borders adorned with temple motifs (gomi), checkerboard patterns (koti kammli), bold pallus featuring geometric designs in white or contrasting silk threads, and its traditional weaving technique known as tope teni. Traditionally draped in the Kasta or Nauvari style, for movement and functionality, over time, they have transitioned to more contemporary styles. Today, Ilkal sarees continue to thrive through cooperative weaving societies and artisan-led revivals across Maharashtra and Karnataka mostly, ensuring the survival of this time-honoured craft.
