Nelly de Grab was born to a wealthy family with a long history in fashion and apparel manufacturing. The family fled Nazi invaded Czechoslovakia, to America in 1939, her family surviving, purely on the prophets from selling the family Stradivarius violin.

After settling in New York, Nelly started designing softly pleated cotton skirts, based on textiles from Portugal. Peck & Peck on 5th Avenue purchased her first batch and by 1955 Nelly de Grab had become a prominent firm on 7th Ave in New York. Focused on separates, coordinates, and mix and match, made of high end, fancy fabrics like taffeta, brocade and velvet, Nelly changed the face of formal ware. The firm was taken over by Lowell Judson after Nelly's death in 72, but sadly, does not appear to have survived for more than 4 or 5 years.
